Not much is known about the Axle Model code so this decoder will focus on decoding the Axle Ratio code, the Ring Gear Diameter code, and the Build Date code. If more information becomes available to decode the Axle Model code completely, this decoder will be ammended accordingly.

There were many different rear axle ratios available but only two differential types; "limited slip" and "conventional". Ford calls their version of the limited slip differential "Traction Lok". All '81 and later V8 Mustangs and Capris, '83-'84 Mustang GT Turbos and Capri RS Turbos, and '84-'86 Mustang SVOs had a Traction Lok differential as mandatory/standard equipment. A conventional differential is not limited slip. Ford did not ever call their limited slip differential "posi". That is what General Motors calls their version of the limited slip differential. |

| There were three different ring gear sizes from '79 through '86; 6.75", 7.5", and 8.8". It hasn't been determined with any certainty what vehicles got the 6.75" rear, but it was last used in the '82 model year, and models with a 2.3 turbo or V8 did not have it. Models with a 2.3 turbo or V8 through '85, and non V8 models in '86 had a 7.5" rear. Models with a V8 in '86 had an 8.8" rear. |

| Build dates on axle tags consist of one number, then one letter, and finally one or two numbers. The first number is the year. The following letter is the month. The final number(s) is/are the day. |
