For the past few years, about once a year, a certain 1982 model year Mustang shows up for sale.  It is purported to be a Mustang SS.  The Mustang SS seems to be what Ford thought of calling the Mustang GT, before it was decided to go with GT.  In 1981, Ford offered an Escort SS, but the SS was dropped the following year, and eventually replaced by the Escort GT.  The mention of this car and the phantom SS badge always generates interest.

Well, that same car has surfaced once again, and is being discussed on the message board. Various hints as to Ford's plans for the Mustang SS have survived through the years.  A magazine article mention, a model car produced, even an SS badge.  Among the rumors that circulate is that Ford had already started production of the Mustang SS, started delivering cars to dealerships, and then had to send out employees to pull the SS badging and add the Mustang GT decals seen on early 1982 model year GTs.

As always, we are on the look out for any Ford documentation, any images of the cars that might have been produced, before being re-badged as Mustang GTs, anything that gives solid evidence of what was going on with the Mustang SS.  If you have anything you would like to share, please contact us.
